COPENHAGEN — High school seniors it’s time to show off your SSWAG.
The UP! Coalition and Mountain View Prevention Services came together recently to give out goodies and spread awareness to Lewis County high school seniors through the distribution of SSWAG — “Sweet Stuff With a Goal” bags.
A few of the gifts in the bags are lanyards, water bottles and cord tacos. When it comes down to what the seniors would want out of the bag the most, Cassie Forbus thinks “it’s the earbuds and the phone holder.” Mrs. Forbus is the coordinator of Lewis County’s UP! Coalition.
The UP! Coalition is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “empower residents to make educated decisions about living a healthy lifestyle.”
United Prevention Coalition of Lewis County and Mountain View Prevention Services teamed up this prom/graduation season to hold SSWAG events. They want to promote things such as safe driving, awareness and prevention of tobacco use, underage drinking and prescription abuse in Lewis County.
The items in the bags, a big part of this whole event, could not have happened without the help of sponsors, including Jeb’s Restaurant, Community Bank, Lewis County Stop DWI and Lowville Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The SSWAG bags are being distributed to seniors through local schools.
The first SSWAG event was held May 13 at Copenhagen Central School. There, the two organizations handed out the bags and conducted alcohol and marijuana prevention presentations.
Along with the bags of gifts and the presentations about awareness, the UP! Coalition gave to each school a $100 gift card and a $400 donation to schools that hold after-prom parties.
Beaver River, South Lewis, Lowville and Harrisville high schools also received SSWAG bags.
