Some ABC 50 viewers must rescan TVs Aug. 2

DAYTONA NILES/WATERTOWN DAILY TIMESWWTI ABC 50, pictured above in March 2018, will move frequencies on Aug. 2, requiring viewers using over-the-air antennas to rescan their television sets.

WATERTOWN — Viewers who watch WWTI-ABC 50 using over the air antennas must rescan their television sets on Aug. 2 to continue viewing its programs.

The Federal Communications Commission is requiring many television stations, including ABC 50, to move to new frequencies after it auctioned broadcast airwaves to increase capacity for wireless internet broadband services. Viewers do not need to purchase new equipment or services, and the channel number will not change.

In order to rescan, viewers must select “scan” or “autotune” on the television or converter box control menu. Instructions are usually available by pressing the “set-up” or “menu” buttons on the remote control.

The station kicks off preliminary work for the transition Monday and engineers will replace the old equipment from the station. It plans to use a temporary antenna until it receives the new equipment, which may affect viewers using antennas.
