POTSDAM — Potsdam Central School District will host a live Zoom discussion with racial-justice writer and educator Debby Irving on Jan. 13.

According to a press release from Capital Region BOCES, Ms. Irving will discuss her personal evolution from “well-meaning” to “well-doing,” when it comes to unpacking her beliefs about racism and her desire to help people of color.

The release states that the presentation will offer an opportunity to embrace diversity and inclusion, and will include pauses for reflection, dialogue and time for questions.

The presentation is free to attend and open to everyone. It starts at 6 p.m.

“It’s a live virtual event, and Potsdam High School is just hosting it, so they’re inviting the community to join virtually,” said Brittany M. Bailey, digital content specialist for Capital Region BOCES.

She said the school is always trying to improve upon Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, and this talk is one way to get the community involved.

“Debby is an award-winning author who wrote ‘Waking Up White,’ which describes her transition from being a bystander to somebody who actively acts against racism,” Ms. Bailey said. “This is a good opportunity for the school district and community members to embrace diversity and inclusion and expand their knowledge-base on it.”

According to her website, www.debbyirving.com, Ms. Irving seeks to “educate other white people confused and frustrated by racism by transforming anxiety and inaction into empowerment and action.”
