LOWVILLE — Location, location, location.

There is so much information “out there” that one app or website that has everything you’re looking for on a certain topic in one location is a real find.

When it comes to options for a “naturally healthier lifestyle” in Lewis County, Naturally Healthy Lewis County, the new app created by the county Public Health office with help from Cornell Cooperative Extension and the county economic development office, seeks to be just such a location.

People interested in healthy eating can find out where the seasonal farmers markets and farm stand stores are throughout the county as well as nutritional seminars and workshops in the area all on Naturally Healthy Lewis County.

Free and low-cost exercise options, like hiking, walking, skiing and snowshoeing trails, community centers and “open time” offered by county public schools for community members to access weight rooms, pools and even hallways for walking are also listed on the app.

Public Health Specialist Anna Platz has been working on the app since February 2018, learning the ins and outs by trial and error to ensure the app would be user-friendly and easy to update. She sees Naturally Healthy Lewis County as a dynamic, constantly growing and changing body of information about the county.

“With all that we have to get started, we still have ice rinks and swimming holes ...”

“This list is not exhaustive. If something isn’t listed, it’s free to be included so I hope people will reach out with that information,” Ms. Platz said.

The app idea was included in Public Health’s strategic plan for 2018 as a way to help people find what’s available in their own county to help them live a healthier lifestyle, especially those who may not have the finances to pay for a gym membership or who get SNAP benefits, that can be used at farmer’s markets and many farm stands.

Ms. Platz said she believes the app will also be useful to newcomers and tourists to the area, too.

Public Health is rolling out a marketing campaign this month by getting reuseable grocery bags with the app’s logo and flyers about the app to potential users and in key locations around the county.

Naturally Healthy Lewis County can be downloaded on Google Play or the Apple App Store. It has a corresponding website at https://www.naturallyhealthylewiscounty.org/.
