Walgreens will not sell abortion pills in states where lawmakers have taken strong anti-abortion stances — even in places where abortion is legal.
The pharmacy chain announced the decision after almost two dozen Republican state attorneys general threatened legal action if Walgreens made the drugs available in their states, Politico reported Thursday.
Walgreens promised it wouldn’t sell abortion pills in its stores or via mail to those states.
That even goes for states including Alaska and Montana, where abortion is legal, according to Politico.
In states like Kansas, legal battles are raging over conservative efforts to crack down on abortion.
“There is currently complexity around this issue in Kansasand elsewhere,” Fraser Engerman, Walgreens’ senior director of external relations, was quoted as saying.
Kansas authorities “will not hesitate to enforce the lawsagainst mailing and dispensing abortion pills,” the state’s Attorney General Kris Kobach said in a statement to Politico.
