WATERTOWN - A lawn mower burst into flames near the green on the first hole at Ives Hill Country Club Sunday morning, before an explosion rang out that could be heard throughout the west side of the city.
Watertown Fire Captain John Zingaro said the fire broke out at about 10 a.m. Firefighters doused the flaming mower with water, extinguishing the flames quickly. The man mowing, who was not immediately identified, was not hurt.
“He said he was mowing and all of a sudden had a bunch of smoke coming from the underside of it, got off it and it just burst into flames,” Capt. Zingaro said.
The mower was destroyed in the fire, and all that remained was melted hulk surrounded by charred grass. As the firefighters worked golfers backed up at the first tee box, and passers by stopped to watch.
