WATERTOWN — A fire ignited in a State Street home and caused the roof to collapse early Sunday morning.

City fire Battalion Chief James Holland said flames were spewing from one of the windows when they arrived at about 5 a.m., but when they reached the second floor during their internal attack on the blaze, the roof had already collapsed.

“The house was occupied,” he said. “There were no injuries; no civilian or firefighter injuries.”

Crews were still battling pockets of fire at the home, 1125 State St., as of 12:30 p.m., when State Street had remained blocked off at the intersection of South Hamilton Street.

While the fire had spread throughout the roof and attic, Mr. Holland said the first floor exhibited only smoke and extensive water damage. Firefighters had extinguished most of the flames by 7 a.m., Mr. Holland said.
