Unlicensed Nebraska midwife arrested in newborn’s death after home delivery

HARRISVILLE — A Wayne County woman driving an ATV died in a collision with a pick-up truck Friday afternoon on North Shore Road near Lake Bonaparte.

State police said Tammy J. Shears, 53, Savannah, was driving east in the town of Diana and as she drove around a sharp curve, she collided with Isaiah S. Young’s truck. Mr. Young, 28, Gouverneur, was traveling west on North Shore Road. Police said the ATV overturned and Ms. Shears and her passenger, Bailey R. Dougherty, were both ejected.

Ms. Shears was pronounced dead at the scene. LifeNet airlifted Ms. Dougherty, 28, Sodus Point, to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, for treatment of severe leg injuries. Mr. Young was not injured.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
