BROWNVILLE — A Dexter man was killed after his truck left Middle Road and caught fire Friday night, police said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday morning, in a news release, said Loren A. Richardson, 40, was killed after the truck he was driving crashed and caught fire shortly after 10 p.m.

Investigators found that Mr. Richardson was driving the 2015 Dodge Ram northeast on Middle Road when, for reasons that are not known, he veered from his lane into the oncoming lane and off the left side of the road. The truck did not strike anything and came to rest in deep snow.

The vehicle caught fire and a passerby called 911 at 10:18 p.m. Emergency personnel were unable to remove Mr. Richardson from the burning vehicle. After flames were extinguished, his body was found in the driver’s seat.

Brownville Fire Chief Ryan McIntosh said Saturday night that investigators cannot explain why the pickup truck ended up in the snowbank since it didn’t hit anything.

The fire caused too much damage to determine what happened.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Town of Brownville Fire Department, New York State Police, Guilfoyle Ambulance, VanTassel’s wrecker service and the County Medical Examiner’s office.
