Marie R. Knowlton


CROGHAN, NY ~ Marie R. Knowlton, 94, formerly of Erie Canal Rd., Croghan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since January.

Born April 14, 1925 in Carthage, NY, a daughter of Harold V. and Nellie (Russell) Rubar, she was graduated from Augustinian Academy in 1943.

She married Alfred H. Knowlton on October 7, 1944 in St. James Church, Carthage. Mr. Knowlton died on May 31, 1996.

In her younger years, Marie had worked for the dental practice of Dr. Willis Walters in Carthage and for Woolworth’s Department Store in Watertown.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting and had been a devoted walker of up to 3 miles a day.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy J. Dana, of Russell, NY, and Donna M. and husband, Patrick Kloster, of Croghan; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; her sister, Joan Smith of Lehigh Acres, FL, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, John Rubar, who died in March, 2018.

A graveside committal service will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Vincent dePaul Cemetery in Belfort, NY, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department.
