William “Bill” A. Mittag, age 84, resident of Altmar since 1948, passed away Sunday at his home. Bill was born April 19, 1935 in New York City, the son of Willi and Auguste Nie Mittag. He graduated from Altmar-Parish High School in 1953. He attended Syracuse University from 1953 until 1954 and was employed by Carrier Corp from 1954 to 1956. Bill married Janet Hedden Mittag on February 14, 1959. Bill enlisted in the NYANG “The Boys From Syracuse” in 1954 and earned his commission and wings in 1957. He deployed to Phalsbourg, France during the Berlin Crisis in 1961/62. After nine years he went on to serve 17 years in the US Coast Guard as a search and rescue pilot at several USCG air stations. He retired in 1980, as a Lt. Commander. After his retirement from the military Bill worked security for Niagara Mohawk from 1980 until 1990. He was the Albion Town Supervisor from 1998 until 1999. He also owned and operated Mittag Lock & Key on State Street in Watertown and Altmar from 1983 until 2010.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Janet Mittag, three daughters, Gretchen (Elmer) Plantz of Altmar, Laurie (Gary) Applegate of Mooresville, NC, Anne Carter (Troy White) of Charlotte, NC, and one son, Bill (Cathy) Mittag of Altmar, grandchildren, Zachary Plantz and Rhiannon Plantz, Conor Applegate and Emily Applegate, Danielle (Scott) Frushtick, Matt Carter and Morgan Carter, Alex Mittag and Ashlynn Mittag, two great-grandsons, Jagger Plantz and Ben Frushtick, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Mittag and Wilma Moore.
