MEXICO – Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) Nutrition Services recently held an open house at its Mexico Dining and Activity Center in Mexico. Representatives from the Oswego County Office for the Aging joined OCO staff in welcoming guests and serving a special luncheon to area seniors.

The event included live entertainment from Paul Vandish, which was sponsored by United Health Care, and a number of door prize drawings donated by area businesses; including oil changes from Dick’s Auto, gift cards from Stefano’s Restaurant and McDonalds, beauty supplies from Hair Boutique, Lou Lou bags and accessories from Terry Simonton, a remote device charger from Oswego AT&T, and gift cards to Kinney’s Drugs and Tops Friendly Markets, which were donated by a Mexico resident who supports the Mexico Dining and Activity Center.

Located in the Lighthouse Church of God, 11 S. Jefferson St., in Mexico, OCO’s Activity and Dining Center offers those ages 60 and over the opportunity to enjoy a nutritious lunch with friends and neighbors and partake in a number of activities including crafts, games, socializing and other enriching activities selected by the seniors. According to the Government Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show that seniors with an active lifestyle enjoy a variety of health benefits including decreased risk of falls, increased muscle strength and stamina and reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, social support from friends and family consistently relates to overall wellness in senior citizens.

In addition to the Mexico site OCO Nutrition Services has Dining and Activity Centers in Fulton, Hannibal, Parish, Phoenix and Central Square. Through these sites and its Meal on Wheels program, OCO Nutrition Services provided over 240,000 meals in 2018 to seniors throughout Oswego County. Nutrition services also has a registered dietician who is available to meet one on one with participating seniors to answer questions on healthy eating and create meal plans specific to their dietary needs.
