The Ogdensburg International Airport will receive $1,534,000 in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration.
The funding, announced jointly by Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, both D-NY, and separately by U.S. Rep. Elise M. Stefanik, will be used for a new approach lighting system for the runway.
“The installation of the approaching lighting system at the Ogdensburg International Airport will provide another important visual tool for pilots landing at the Airport, particularly during poor weather conditions,” Wade A. Davis, executive director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, was quoted as saying in a press release. “This added safety feature will minimize delays and disruptions further reducing flight diversions and cancellations during inclement weather events.”
Ms. Stefanik praised the economic impact of the grant.
“I’m proud to announce this $1.5 million grant for the Ogdensburg International Airport,” she was quoted as saying in a press release. “I am a consistent advocate for our rural airports and improved infrastructure. More capabilities for our region’s airports will create jobs and increase tourism — a significant economic driver in the North Country.”
Both senators touted the need to fund small airports.
“Keeping our airports in top-notch shape is crucial to safe travel for area residents and in attracting business and tourism to Ogdensburg and throughout the North Country,” Sen. Schumer was quoted as saying.
Sen. Gillibrand agreed.
“Maintaining airport infrastructure helps promote local economic development, and I will continue fighting for the resources our airports need to be safe, modern, and efficient,” she was quoted as saying.
The grant is awarded through the FAA Airport Improvement Program.
