MASSENA — After a month of opportunity to dispose of items, town of Massena residents used 171 of 373 vouchers that were handed out for the town’s spring cleanup.

“Spring cleanup went very well this year,” Highway Superintendent Frank Diagostino said.

“The last two days were the busiest,” Town Councilman Samuel D. Carbone Jr. said.

Town residents went through a new spring cleanup procedure this year. When Mr. Diagostino started in 2010, the Highway Department went door-to-door to pick up items, a process that took two weeks. Then, from 2013 to 2018, the Highway Department set up at the transfer station, residents brought their refuse to the station and Highway Department employees helped them unload.

This year, they went to a voucher system, with residents bringing their items to the transfer station and the town picking up the tab. Residents picked up vouchers at the tax collector’s window and redeemed those when they dropped their items off at the transfer station. The spring cleanup lasted throughout May.

This year’s spring cleanup resulted in the collection of 36.47 tons of items and a total cost of $4,500. Mr. Diagostino said their tipping fee was average to what it had been in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

This year’s spring cleanup in the village was similar to the town’s program. Instead of the Department of Public Works picking items up curbside as they have done in the past, residents were mailed vouchers and brought their own items to the transfer station.

About 4,000 vouchers that were sent out to village residents for this year’s spring cleanup went unused. Department of Public Works Superintendent Hassan A. Fayad said 4,865 vouchers had been mailed to account holders in the village, and 864 were used during the spring cleanup.

The village’s cleanup was held from April 22 to May 4.
