Trump’s chief of staff confirms the president’s mendacity

The following editorial appeared in the New York Daily News on Oct. 17:

NEW YORK (Tribune News Service) — In the face of charges he held up military aid to Ukraine to help himself politically in the 2020 elections, the man who sits behind the desk in the Oval Office shouts “no quid pro quo!”

That man is a barefaced liar. The plain fact is now confirmed by Donald Trump’s own chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney.

After announcing that the 2020 G-7 summit will be at Trump’s Doral Resort — another potentially impeachable offense, if the Constitution’s emoluments clause is to be honored — Mulvaney turned to the charges fueling Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.

Said he, of his boss ordering the hold-up of $391 million in assistance authorized by Congress: “Did he also mention to me in passing the corruption related to the DNC server? Absolutely. No question about that,” he said. “But that’s it, and that’s why we held up the money.”

That “corruption related to the DNC server” is, to be clear, a nonsense GOP conspiracy theory about Hillary Clinton’s missing emails that Trump seeks to mainline in time for 2020 in order to bamboozle the public over the Mueller probe and excuse Russia for the conduct of which every credible source says they are guilty.

Challenged on the obscenity of the dirt-for-dollars arrangement, Mulvaney had the gall to claim, “We do that all the time. Get over it.”

No. No. No. No. America cannot, will not casually normalize the linkage of political dirty tricks by foreign powers in exchange for millions in taxpayer-provided security funding. This is foreign policy as Mafia protection racket.

Indeed, even as Mulvaney was dissembling, another key figure in the Ukraine scandal, ambassador to the E.U. Gordon Sondland, confessed under oath that he was late in realizing that the ultimate goal of Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani was “to involve Ukrainians, directly or indirectly, in the president’s 2020 reelection campaign,” i.e. the investigate the Bidens part of the quid pro quo that Mulvaney hopes everyone ignores.

Donald Trump said he was a dealmaker. He said he would get things done. Now America sees clearly how nasty those deals are, and how dastardly those deeds.

to airball55: Clinton is guilty

guilty of what? she has been investigated from here to kingdom come and the conclusion is that she did almost nothing wrong. she should have been more careful with her emails, but this is trivial by the standards of things. she broke no laws. if you pay attention to the news you regularly see trumpers and republicans getting caught being sloppy with their infosec practices (just yesterday house republicans pulled a stunt where they barged into a classified area with their cell phones), but no one raises a big fuss because it's not actually that big of deal on the merits. (although it does make clear how hypocritical people on the right are about this stuff.)

the bleachbit, simcards, smashing of phones

clinton smashed her phones once she was done with them because that is what the guidelines in place required her to do with retired devices that had stored classified information. do you see how easily you are manipulated by right-wing talking points? ooh ooh, hammer to the phone -- sounds a little shady until you actually take the five seconds to learn what it's about.

What gdp numbers and job numbers are you looking at?

job numbers: in obama's final 30 months, we averaged 220,000 jobs a month. in trump's first 30 months, the number was 191,000.

gdp numbers: "The latest figures show the economy expanded 2.3% in the past year, exactly the pace of the past 10 years, since the Great Recession ended — with prospects for even slower growth ahead."

record unemployment lows, record job growth, record gdp growth

it is true that unemployment is very low by historical standards. however, it was already quite low when trump came into office. the bulk of obama's term in office (once we were out of the great depression) saw nothing but continued improvement in unemployment, and that trend has continued under trump. meanwhile, "record job growth" and "record gdp growth" are both absurd fictions. the numbers prove you laughably wrong on those counts.

Do we have a problem or not? Are there cages being built or not?

as i said before, we do not have a real problem with the raw number of people coming (although it's worth pointing out that illegal border crossings were up a bit in 2019 -- so much for trump making the problem better). cages being built is purely a problem of trump's own making. if you were actually bothered by kids being ripped out their parents' arms then you would be calling for a return to the bush-obama status quo ante.

What happened to collision lol?

what happened is that trump and his lackeys colluded, albeit to a degree that falls short of violating criminal conspiracy statutes ("collusion" is not a well-defined legal term), and then they obstructed justice like mad to cover up their dirt. so what i just wrote even undersells the case against trump. we don't totally know what they did because of trump's efforts to compromise the investigation and because witnesses like manafort and stone didn't cooperate. if you want to learn something about it in good faith (i know, ha ha), i would highly recommend giving a listen to "the report."

Sir, stop responding to me, your a hateful liar

tell you what, i will stop as soon as you stop spreading crazy talking points and misinformation. deal?

Such an excellent comment, hermit thrush.

I really wish there was an upvote feature!

Time to move on from trump. Now, mind you, this article loses a ton of credibility when it refers to the Clinton email scandal as nonsense or whatever...(sigh) but trump just can’t be the answer going forward. To me it’s about results. Way too much turnover, immigration has not been fixed nor the wall completed. Everyday is a different distraction. Granted...some of the distractions are made up and propagated by people who are just poor losers but lets move on and hope for a spirited election based on what American taxpayers need. The tax cuts have worked, let’s continue to look at that. Health care has to be addressed ASAP. Immigration has to be fixed, a decades long problem everyone in dc has kicked the can on. A little effort to make our lives better please and less on what party is doing what with the Ukraine

Time to move on from trump.

says who? he still occupies the most powerful office in the world.

this article loses a ton of credibility when it refers to the Clinton email scandal as nonsense or whatever

the only nonsense here is your own. the claim in the piece is not that the clinton email story writ large in the 2016 election was nonsense. (though the recent state department report does show that it was all basically a big nothingburger.) rather, the claim is that the specific conspiracy theory being pushed by trumpworld that clinton's "missing" emails are somehow stored on a server which has ended up in ukraine is just that, a nutbag conspiracy theory. reading comprehension.

To me it’s about results.... nor the wall completed.

trump himself has conceded that the wall won't do anything to help with the illegal immigration problem and is purely a symbolic totem for his supporters. on the other hand, illegal immigration already came down to quite low rates under george w. bush, and it stayed low under obama. there has been a recent surge in families coming, and that has led to some new challenges (exacerbated by trump's horrific family separation policy), but as a matter of raw numbers the problem was already basically solved.

hope for a spirited election based on what American taxpayers need. the primary issue over which trump is going to be impeached is his effort to abuse his powers to rig the upcoming election.

The tax cuts have worked

says who? what's the evidence? economic growth has been no better under trump than it was under obama. job growth has actually been a little worse under trump. the deficit under trump has soared.

Immigration has to be fixed, a decades long problem everyone in dc has kicked the can on.

this is, again, madness. i am the opposite of a fan of george w. bush, but illegal border crossings came way down while he was president, and so far as i am aware he really deserves credit for this due to policy changes.

less on what party is doing what with the Ukraine we are talkin about the core functioning of our democracy here! without that we have nothing!

"if the Constitution’s emoluments clause is to be honored" how about the constitution's impeachment clause being honored... just another hit piece on Trump by the left, really sad..

hermit thrush

what on earth does this mean? what is "sad" about asking that the constitution be upheld?

this comment is just another bout of whining from the right, really sad...

Holmes -- the real one
