Letter to the Editor

The Times has reported that Massena Memorial has experienced significant loses due to low census. Could the decrease in census be a trend that MMH patients are being sent to Canton-Potsdam Hospital? What services at MMH are being or planning to be curtailed in order to send patients to CPH? There is no question that decisions are being made to benefit CPH.

Over the past week I have had many conversations about the fate of Massena Memorial Hospital. What was most surprising about the discussions was how much is unknown about the long term impact for our community by turning our hospital over the Canton Potsdam Hospital. MMH is one of the largest employers in Massena and provides needed services to our local industry. Regardless of what led to the decision to turn the hospital over to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, MMH will likely follow in the path of the old Canton Hospital and Gouverneur Hospital. History repeats itself when we don’t learn from the past. Our community will lose our hospital, not only services, but jobs.

The ability for the hospital to work through its problems were taken away from hospital administration. The fate of MMH and the community impact rests solely with the decisions made by the town board and the current hospital board.
