Seventeen area players are taking part in various National Hockey League development camps this week and next.
Clarkson has 14 of its future, current or past players attending camps, led by Nico Sturm, who left after his junior year last spring and played for the Minnesota Wild. He is taking part in the Wild’s development camp. Goalie Jake Kielly, who also left after his junior year last spring, is attending the Vancouver Canucks camp.
Five Clarkson players are attending the camp of the Columbus Blue Jackets, which may not be a surprise since former Clarkson player Jarmo Kekalainen is the team’s general manager and former Golden Knight Chris Clark is the general manager of the American Hockey League affiliate in Cleveland.
The Golden Knights in Columbus this week include defensemen Mike Underwood, Greg Moro and Connor McCarthy and forwards Josh Dunne and Devin Brosseau.
Clarkson goalie Kris Oldham is a Tampa Bay Lighting draft pick and is attending their camp. Future Golden Knights, goalie Ethan Haider and forward Alexander Campbell, where both picked last weekend by the Nashville Predators and are at that camp.
Sophomore forward Nick Campoli is a Vegas Golden Knights draft choice and is at that camp and two drafted Clarkson incoming freshman are at camps with their respective teams, defenseman Dustyn McFaul (Boston) and forward Anthony Romano (Phoenix).
St. Lawrence University has two players attending camps. Forward Keenan Suthers is at the Vegas Golden Knights camp and defenseman Jordan Power, who will join the squad in the fall of 2020, is at the Ottawa Senators camp.
The other player with area connections attending a camp is Canton native J.D. Greenway, a defenseman who was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016 and currently plays for the University of Maine.
