Massena (14-1) vs. Ballston Spa (20-2)

Time, Place: 5 p.m. at Salmon River HS

Outlook: Massena is No. 7 in the state poll and reached the state playoffs with a 7-1 win over Malone. David Dubray pitched the Red Raiders to the win. He is 4-1 with a 0.82 earned-run average. Massena’s offense is led by Chris Paige (.413) and Robert Engstrom (.419). Garrett Engstrom is 3-0 with a 1.33 earned-run average ... Ballston Spa, ranked second in the state, was the top seed in the Section 2 tournament and beat No. 6 Averill Park 9-3 in the championship game. The Scotties beat No. 4 Queensbury 4-0 in the semifinal and edged No. 9 Burnt Hills 9-8 in eight innings in a quarterfinal. This is Ballston Spa’s first appearance in the state playoffs since 1973. Luke Gold was the Suburban Council Player of the Year and Michael Poirier was the Pitcher of the Year.

Class C

Norwood-Norfolk (15-2) vs. Fort Plain (20-0)

Time, Place: 5 p.m. at Canton HS

Outlook: Norwood-Norfolk reached today’s game with an 8-3 win over Madrid-Waddington. Luke Allen leads the Flyers with a 6-1 record and a 1.19 earned-run average. He is hitting .405 and has driven in 19 runs. Other top players for the Flyers include Seth Gilbert (.374), Pat Smith (.485) and Sean Derouchie (.400). ... The top-ranked Hilltoppers beat Hoosick Falls 13-0 in the Section 2 championship game, led by 14 strikeouts from the team’s second pitcher John Cortese. The team ace is Troy Butler who beat Greenwich 6-1 in a semifinal and did not allow a hit until the seventh inning. Fort Plain, which has been a Class D team in recent years, winning the state title in 2016, outscored the opposition 39-1 in the Section 2 playoffs. The Hilltoppers have scored 199 runs this season and allowed only 19.

SOFTBALL

Class A

Malone (7-8) vs. Jamesville-DeWitt (19-1)

Time, place: 5 p.m. at Canton HS

Outlook: Malone defeated Massena 10-4 in the Section 10 title game. The Huskies are led by Brynn Nelson, who is hitting .651 and pitcher Ryleigh McCauley, who has 112 strikeouts. She had also contributed on offense with a .481 average. ... The Red Rams are No. 5 in the state poll and cruised through the Section 3 playoffs, outscoring the opposition 14-0, including a 1-0 win over Whitesboro in the championship game. The team is led by pitcher Shayna Marshall, who has a 19-1 record, a 1.28 earned-run average and 114 strikeouts. She also is hitting .429 with nine home runs. Paige Keeler is batting .543.

Class B

OFA (13-5) vs. Ichabod Crane (21-1)

Time, place: 5 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam

Outlook: OFA won the Section 10 title for a sixth straight season with a 13-12 win over Canton in 11 innings. The Blue Devils are led by pitcher Rileigh Planty (.441) as well as shortstop Celia Henry (.468) and catcher Samara LaFlair. ... Ichabod Crane is the top-ranked team in the state and beat Schulyerville 3-1 in the Section 2 championship game. The Riders beat Tamarac 1-0 in a semifinal and defeated Bishop Gibbons 13-1 in the quarterfinals. Bella Milazzo is the team’s top pitcher and the top offensive players include Emma Scheitinger, Brittany Futia and Kaili Saccento.
