CICERO — Hunter Reed of Copenhagen took top honors to highlight the north country’s impressive haul at the New York State High School Clay Target League Championships on Sunday at the Bridgeport Rod and Gun Club.
Reed won the High Gun Overall category with 97 points and captured the High Gun Varsity Male class in what was a north country trap shooting sweep. Gouverneur’s Johnny Cook placed second and Lowville’s Elijah Engelhart was third.
Monica Reed of Carthage won the High Gun Female category with 94 points. Lowville’s Morgan Sancomb finished third.
In the varsity team competition, Lowville finished second overall with 465 points, followed by Beaver River (459) and Carthage (456). South Jefferson was sixth (449) and Gouverneur seventh (448).
Beaver River won the junior varsity competition with 407 points. South Jefferson finished third in novice at 331. Destiny Hitchcock of Gouverneur took first in the High Gun Novice Female category.
Other north country teams competing were: Morristown, Heuvelton, Belleville Henderson, Alexandria, South Lewis, Lisbon, Harrisville and Lyme.
More than 80 high school teams and 1,000 athletes competed in the tournament, which has expanded from 19 schools and 250 athletes just two years ago.
