LAKE PLACID — The International University Sports Federation (FISU) in Lausanne, Switzerland, completed signing the host city contract Thursday, making Lake Placid the official site for the 2023 Winter Universiade, otherwise known as the Winter World University Games.

FISU’s agreement comes after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order in Albany, authorizing Lake Placid and the surrounding north country region to host the 31st games. This will be the village’s second time hosting the event; the other was in 1972. Lake Placid is the only place in the Western Hemisphere to host the Winter Universiade, which began in 1960.
