ELMIRA — The Elmira Pioneers were able to score only in the fifth inning Thursday but that was enough to defeat the Watertown Rapids 5-3 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game.

After the Rapids took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, the Pioneers (11-15) piled on five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The big hit came off the bat of Preston Moore who tripled with the bases loaded, scoring all three of the base runners.

The Rapids (11-15) attempted a comeback in the sixth by scoring two runs, but the scoring stopped there.

Sachin Nambiar was on the mound to start the game for the Rapids and fared well through the first four innings. He finished his night at six innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs.

It was the Rapids’ second straight loss to Elmira and their third loss in their past four games. They’re scheduled to play four more game over the course of the next three days with Sunday being a doubleheader against Newark.

Tonight, the Rapids will travel to Geneva to take on the Red Wings at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Watertown Rapids’ struggles at home this season continued in a loss to the Elmira Pioneers at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

Brody Moore went 4-for-4, including a double, and drove in two runs to help power the Pioneers.

It was the Rapids’ eighth consecutive setback on their home field.

Trae Harmon homered, singled and drove in two runs for Elmira.

Preston Moore and Garrett Schultz each collected three hits for the Pioneers and both knocked in a pair of runs.

Elmira built a 5-1 lead through the first two innings before Watertown bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 6-5.

But the Pioneers responded with eight runs over the next four innings, including four in the top of the fifth.

George Rosales singled twice for the Rapids, Brandon Taylor doubled and singled and James Krick doubled.
