WATERTOWN — Second-seeded Joseph Tufo, and 14-time champion and seventh seed Bob Hughes were early upset victims during Sunday’s opening round of match play at the Watertown City Golf Tournament at the par-72 Ives Hill Country Club.
Paul Grant Jr., seeded 31st in the 32-man field, defeated Tufo, 2 and 1, while Hughes fell to No. 26 seed George Labarr, 5 and 4.
Defending champion and automatic top-seeded qualifier Adam Brown defeated No. 32 Ryan Blevins, 5 and 4, to advance into the second round.
Second-round matches are scheduled Monday through Wednesday, and the pairings include:

No. 25 Tommy Bedard vs. No. 9 TJ Penn;
No. 4 David Marconi vs. No. 20 Dylan Kerehan;
No. 5 Chris Denesha vs. No. 12 Marcus Emerson;
No. 31 Grant vs. No. 18 Shawn Thomas;
No. 26 Labarr vs. No. 10 Sam Cavallario;
No. 3 Andrew Marks vs. No. 14 Jeff Fallon;
No. 6 John Bufalini vs. No. 11 Michael Dipola.
The quarterfinals are set to be played Thursday and Friday, with semifinals slated for Saturday and the 36-hole final set for Sunday.
