Gouverneur twin sisters Randi and Rikki Griffith each captured national titles Thursday in USA Boxing’s National Junior Olympics in Madison, Wis.
Randi, 13, won her fifth national title after beating Victoria Kirker of New Mexico, Hailey Aviles of California and Kayla Huff of Ohio, all by unanimous decision, at 119 pounds in the intermediate class.
Rikki won her third national title with unanimous victories over Gracy Kennedy of North Dakota and Gabriela Tellez of Texas and a split decision over Mercy Hernandez of California, at 114 pounds intermediate.
The number of bouts was a challenge for the boxers as there is more competition for females in the sport, said the Griffiths’ father, Gordy.
“It’s grown so much the last few years,” he said.
The Griffith sisters just completed eighth grade at Gouverneur. Each have competed in Junior Olympics for the past four years and have each won Silver Gloves titles.
