Lewis set for debate on guns

LOWVILLE — A respectful showdown of words is brewing over a local work-around for New York’s strict gun laws.

Signers to the petition calling for a local law making Lewis County a “Second amendment sanctuary county” have been mobilized to attend the Board of Legislators meeting on Tuesday for the petition’s presentation.

Do you support plans to make Lewis County a “Second Amendment sanctuary”?

You voted:

Lewis County and Towns 2A Sanctuary Facebook group is responsible for creating and circulating the petition, and drafting the law they would like to see passed.

“Please remember that our behavior will be on display. We are exercising our 1st amendment right to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances,” say Facebook posts encouraging people to attend the meeting.

Other posts from group members ask county residents who support the idea to “reach out respectfully to your legislator and encourage them to pass the 2nd amendment sanctuary ordinance.”

Like the recent rally in Richmond, Virginia, the group wants to make its presence felt and to be heard without a negative incident.

“We’re trying very hard not to leave a footprint. We want to walk away from the meeting without leaving anything behind,” said Beau Bailey, one of the co-organizers of the movement, “We definitely don’t want to be demonized to people. We have a goal. We have a direction. We just want to be respectful and stay focused.”

Likewise, members of the progressive activist group, Indivisible Lowville, were asked to bring “facts, as opposed to emotional pleas or an argumentative stance,” to the board meeting in an email calling members to meet on Saturday to “exchange facts and statistics that will help us speak to our community.”

“Our whole goal is to plant seeds in the community so that they think, ‘Oh, yeah, that makes sense,’ not necessarily to change the minds of the people that started or signed the petition,” said Indivisible co-leader Emily Lyndaker.

Members were also told to “know your source” so that other people can look up the facts presented at the meeting.

“We will hold one another accountable and not allow bad/false information to spread,” the email said.

Like the 2A group, Indivisible will also be reaching out to legislators and media to share their perspectives and concerns along with the facts, Mrs. Lyndaker said.

As of Friday night, Mr. Bailey said the petition had about 2,100 signatures, however not all of the pages had been collected or counted. He believes there is likely to be “in the neighborhood” of 3,000 signatures in the final count.

If the local law is eventually passed by the legislators, Lewis County will be the first in the state.

Previously, the group said Wyoming County is already a sanctuary county, however, that county’s clerk, Cheryl Ketchum, sent a clarifying email.

“All our supervisors have done is to look at what Mohave County, Ariz., has done,” she wrote, adding that the only action taken was passing a resolution in early 2019 that “clearly opposes infringements on our constitutional rights, nothing about becoming a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary county.”

Mohave County passed resolutions making the county a gun rights sanctuary county in November.

2A petition signers and group members planning to attend the board meeting were also warned through Facebook posts they “must pass through security and metal detectors. Leave your guns and pocket knives at home.”

The February regular board meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the legislative board room on the second floor of the Lewis County Courthouse.

The 2nd Amend is a RESTRICTIVE amendment. It states such in the Preamble to Bill of Rights. the 2A does not grant nor convey any right, but RESTRICTS and PROHIBITS the government from infringing upon this enumerated, pre-existing, God given right.

Our rights, written BEFORE the Constitution, are unalienable and are endowed from our CREATOR – not our legislators, not our government and certainly not from the United Nations and their attempt at gaining control.

the reality is that the second amendment is a poorly written hash.

on the other hand, there is always something particularly funny about people who claim that ownership of a device which was invented around a thousand years ago is a "god given right." i understand people just say that without thinking about what it really means, and indeed that's why it's funny.

ramrodd - here we go again...another commenter who believes they're a constitutional scholar and will cite THEIR interpretation of the constitution and 2nd A...which just happens to support their position... When you're a duly elected judge sitting on the supreme court, then you, along with the other nine justices get to make decisions that the rest of who duly elected them have to abide by.. Lacking that, the comments are no more than blather on a blog..and should be treated as same...

Jesus tells this man to buy guns. Think about that one for a minute. Jesus Christ loves powerful handguns! (hint: I am saying you are a crappy Christian)

The Constitution does not say who the CREATOR is. I think you are thinking of Islam, they very much believe their god tells them to buy guns.

Bravo for you Lewis County. Stand up for your Constitutional rights. They can make cities and counties sanctuaries for illegals but you can’t for the 2nd Amendment and gun rights. The hypocrisy is immeasurable. Hopefully, more counties will follow.

We would really prefer the people of Lewis County work more on getting a job and less on guns and collecting welfare and smoking meth.

MD

The Boycott is still on, no shopping at the businesses that supported the petitions til next year! There are alternatives for everything from concrete to gas and groceries!.

MD

And the numbers are in, less than 7 percent of the county's population signed the petition. As usual, a loud, ill informed minority is making a lot of noise and throwing tantrums regarding a republic's rule of law.

Gracie02

Nailed it MD.... it always amazes me when some local group gets together and disagrees with some law...in the case the 2nd A...and THEY, none being experts in constitutional law, decide their interpretation is the rule of law the rest of us must abide by... The country would be like an episode of Animal House... Judges and courts determine laws...and interpret same based on court cases...

Where did you say you got your law degree from?

She knows more than a bunch of people from one of New York’s failed counties. Remember, these “Second Ammendment” types are immune from personal responsibility. They think Lewis county is a dump because of Albany, etc. These are people dumb enough to think George W Bush and Donald Trump were successful businessmen. Again, Lewis County is so incompetent it does not have a community college. These are welfare queens throwing a tantrum.

CondervstismIsFaiure

Got mine from Georgetown Law, please cite & source in the 2nd Amendment where a explicit individual right to own a firearm exists?

Gracie02

The same place as the group in the article... I don't have one...nether to they... That's my point...everybody has an opinion...but that doesn't mean it's a law and the rest of us have to abide by... Cite some court opinions ... court cases.. I'll read and listen..

Happens everyday..have u been watching the “impeachment” trial. Anyway, back on planet earth I say good for these folks. We all have a right to peaceful protest. I find the hypocrisy of people on here amazing. It seems one may only protest when it suits their “politics.” Read down below and we have a gosh darn Georgetown grad who goes by the name of “conservatism is a failure.” Yup, some quality thinking there. Neither side owns progressivism or conservatism. Only radicals like yourself make claims like that. As for lawlessness...look at New York’s rushed and failing bail reform, yup, lawlessness. Sad. Note here before you get all upset...I didn’t take a stance on the safe act. These comments are sad, disappointing and scary all at once.

nothing you say makes a drop of sense! it's always just some vague incoherent screed coming out of you. "look at New York’s rushed and failing bail reform, yup, lawlessness" -- well, no, that doesn't make a lick of sense. nys actually passed a law about this. it fully adhered to the constitutional process. it's as lawful as it gets. if you don't like, fine, but the words coming out of your mouth simply have no meaning. please take a deep breath and try to say something coherent.
